International Experience Canada
International Experience Canada is a program designed for youth between the ages of 18-35 to travel and work inside Canada. There are three categories for this program:
Working Holiday Program:
The working holiday program allows visitors to apply for an open work permit allowing you to fund your holiday through Canada. You must meet the following criteria in order to be accepted into this program:
Young Professional Program:
This program was developed by the IEC to enable young professionals the ability to gain valuable work experience with a single employer. Applicants interested in this program will need to obtain an employer-specific work permit before traveling to Canada. Similar to the Working Holiday Program, the YPP has certain requirements:
International Co-op Internship
For students interested in gaining on-the-job experience while inside Canada, the IEC developed the International Co-op Internship program. In order to partake in this program, applicants will need to secure an employer-specific work permit. Moreover, applicants must take an internship that specifically relates to their studies and must be recognized by the National Occupational Classification (NOC). What is more, the internship must meet the NOC skill types – level “O”, “A” or “B”. NOC Job type “C” may also qualify if your internship is directly connected to your field of study if you are attending a post-secondary institution in your home country. Like the previous two programs, there are specific requirements for the International Co-op Internship Program:
- Applicants must be students that are registered in a post-secondary institution.
- Applicants must have an internship offer from a Canadian company.
- Applicants must confirm that an internship is required to complete their studies
- Applicants must work for the same company and stay in the same location for the duration of their internship.
If you are interested in partaking in any of the IEC programs, the first step is to enter the IEC applicant pool. This pool is a collection of similar applicants waiting for the invitation to apply for a work permit. Once you have been invited to apply for a work permit and have submitted your application a Canadian immigration officer will assess your credentials. During this assessment, you will be notified if you are required to provide additional paperwork, submit a police clearance report, or medical exam.
